Yellow alert in Chiriquí due to bad weather, the Remigio Rojas channel is at its highest level
Given the constant rains in Chiriquí, the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) declared a yellow alert for the region, while the Operations Center was activated to maintain constant monitoring throughout the region.
Armando Palacios, regional director of Sinaproc, confirmed that in the Alanje area the Remigio Rojas Irrigation System channel remains at its highest level, but only one home was affected in the Guácimo area.
When the canal is at its maximum level, the gates are opened manually so that the waters flow towards the Chico River.
While the inter-institutional team that makes up the COE actively participates in the monitoring and attention to the minor damages that have been reported in the last hours, Palacios explained.
According to Sinaproc, the yellow alert is a warning that indicates that the risk is increasing and people must be prepared to find a safe place before the possibility of evacuations starting.
The passage of a tropical wave through the region is generating constant rains in different parts of the country, but it is reported that the greatest intensity is occurring in the provinces of Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro.
In Boca del Toro, some 27 thousand people affected by the floods were reported as of this morning.
