Preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census indicate that in 2020 there were 21,327 fewer accidents compared to 2019, which had 30,201 cases.

This decrease is due to the mobility restriction measures that were implemented in 2020 due to the pandemic, which limited free movement.

However, in the last four months of the year (from September to December), when the lifting of measures began, there was a slight rebound.

Panama and West Panama reported a percentage of accidents of 71.4%, followed by Chiriquí with 9.5% and the rest of the provinces 19.1%.

Likewise, INEC data show that in 2020 there were 178 deaths from traffic accidents, that is, 130 fatalities less than in 2019 whose figure was 308.

January reflected the highest number of deaths, with a figure of 30 deaths, while April was the lowest month, with 6 deaths.

Panama adds a total of 28 fatalities due to a traffic accident until February 23, 2021.
