This week, Panama registered a day with more than 1,000 new cases of covid-19, a figure that had not occurred for months.
The Minister of Health of Panama, Luis Francisco
Sucre, said this Friday that 90% of the new cases of
covid-19 occur in family and friends gatherings, and affirmed that it is everyone's responsibility to avoid contagion so that the third wave in which the country is plunged does not get worse.
Sucre indicated that if the population continues with social activities and they forget the safety regulations, "we are sure to get infected and we will infect other people", and in this context he warned that already in the country "we are in the third wave".
However,
Sucre indicated that at the moment there are no plans to "tighten" or establish restrictions on mobility, since this Sunday will be celebrated Father's Day, although he said that all this will depend on "maturity and civic responsibility."
This week, Panama registered a day with more than 1,000 new cases of
covid-19, a figure that had not occurred for months, amid alerts about the arrival of a third pandemic wave.
In addition, the positivity for
covid cases has exceeded 7.7%, above the 5% or less registered weeks ago and which denoted control of the pandemic.
Panama, a country of 4.28 million inhabitants, has already suffered two pandemic waves, for which the authorities have reintroduced restrictions on mobility, especially at night and on Sundays, in much of the national territory.
The Central American country is advancing with its vaccination process, and to date 1,396,100 doses have been applied against
covid-19, both from the pharmaceutical company
Pfizer, its main supplier, and from
AstraZeneca, the Ministry of Health (
Minsa) reported.
With the advent of
vaccines, there has been a "significant decrease" in the mortality of older adults between the ages of 60 and 80 years, groups that have already been immunized, and "no deaths" have been reported as a result of the application of the preparations, according to the
Minsa.
Panama added 976 new cases of
covid-19 and 7 deaths from the disease on Friday, one of them from a previous date not specified, to reach 392,166 confirmed infections and 6,465 deaths in more than a year of pandemic.
There are 468 hospitalized for the
coronavirus in the ward and 76 in the Intensive Care Units (ICU), while 9,257 remain isolated at home and 413 in hotels, for a total of 10,214 active (contagious) cases.
13,320 tests were carried out on this day to detect
covid cases, which yielded a positivity of 7.3%. Panama has so far applied 2,856,942 diagnostic tests.
