Public Ministry initiates investigation into alleged sexual crime at national mental health institution

The Public Ministry began this investigation after complaints from patients who claimed to be abused by Insam staff.
The Public Ministry of Panama reported that the Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office initiated an ex officio investigation through the Primary Care Section for the alleged commission of a sexual crime in a mental health institution.

The Public Ministry added that these investigations follow the complaints published in the newspaper La Prensa.

"We started this case ex officio yesterday as a result of a publication in a local newspaper. Obviously, as soon as we received the notification of this publication, we asked the prosecutor to initiate an investigation to corroborate or verify the facts." assured the Attorney General of the Nation in charge, Javier Caraballo.

It should be added that this morning the journalist Flor Mizrachi told Telemetro Reporta that since it is a state entity, allowing these humiliations becomes an abuse by the State.

Regarding the complaints, the communicator indicated that so far there are no defendants and added that the personnel identified for the alleged commission of this crime have not been separated from the National Institute of Mental Health (Insam).

This morning, personnel from the Ombudsman's Office approached Insam to initiate an investigation after the complaints.
