Reynaldo Alexis Santana, es actualmente el Rey Naso junto al mandatario panameño, Laurentino Cortizo

President Cortizo sanctions Law that creates the Naso Tjër-Di region

The Panamanian president, Laurentino Cortizo sanctioned in Sieyik, the bill No. 656, which creates the Naso Tjër-Di region, which constitutes a special political division, segregated from the Changuinola district, Bocas del Toro province.

The new Comarca will have a total delimitation area of 160,616 hectares, of which 125,141 hectares belong to the La Amistad International Park and 21,722 belong to the Palo Seco Protective Forest, both protected areas.

The sanction was carried out in the Plaza del Rey, in Sieyik, and was attended by the Naso king, Reynaldo Alexis Santana, and chiefs and chiefs of native peoples from all over the country. The new regulations were signed by the Minister of Government, Janaina Tewaney, and the Chief Executive.

Currently the government is under a mixture of constitutional and hereditary monarchy. The King is now elected by the people in a vote in which women can also run, but they must belong to the Santana family, the ruling dynasty, which began in the first half of the 20th century.

Cortizo wrote through his Twitter account: I sanctioned Law 656 that creates the Naso Tjër-Di region, guaranteeing the ancestral heritage of the Naso people and their rights. I have no doubt that our indigenous people, as they have done throughout history, they will continue to conserve these protected areas.

The president announced the construction of a 6-kilometer highway in the region to continue closing the gaps of inequality in this population. The road that includes the sections: Guabito - San Dan Druy - Tiger Hill; Silencio - Bonyic - Rancho Quemado; Charagre - Quebrada Carbón - Sieyic, will be tendered on December 30 for 29 million balboas.

Santana said that in the region the protected areas are doubly protected because “the Nasos are guardians of natural resources; proof of this is that the Teribe River and its forests have been protected for millennia ”.

General aspects of the Naso people

They are an indigenous group located northwest of Panama, in an area of 1,300 km². This territory covers a large part of the Teribe river basin, in Changuinola and the San San river and they speak the Naso language.

His community is made up mostly of farmers, who supplement their income with the sale of agricultural products and some handicrafts that they transport to the city, relatively close to Changuinola. The traditional Naso houses are built on stilts of a kind of palm (jira) and the roofs are thatched with another type (palenquilla). Residents sleep on the soft bark of a rubber tree.

While newer homes use wooden boards for the walls and floors, some sometimes have zinc roofs.

Panama already has other indigenous political divisions: the Guna Yala Comarca, Embera-Wounaan Comarca, Kuna Madugandi Comarca, Ngabe-Bugle Comarca, and the Kuna de Wargandí Comarca.

The Naso people asked the President of the Republic to sanction the Law that creates the Naso Tijer Dí region, following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), which declared that two articles of Bill No. 656 on the creation of this region.
