The first batch of 12,840 doses of the vaccine against covid-19 developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, arrived in Panama at dawn on Wednesday, January 20.

After being received at the airport, the vaccine doses were transferred to the National Biological Depository of the Ministry of Health through the South Corridor.

Initially a first delivery of 40,000 doses had been announced, however, Pfizer temporarily reduced global shipments to increase its production capacity.

The rest of the 450,000 agreed doses are expected to be received in the first quarter of 2021.

“We are going for almost a year of this and I am proud of the team that went to receive this batch of vaccines. Today is a special day for Panama, please do not lower our guard, "said the President of the Republic of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, who was in the company of Vice President José Gabriel Carrizo.

Luis Sucre, Minister of Health, announced that "once the vaccine arrives in Panama, the vaccination process will take place immediately."

The National Government prepared a vaccination plan divided into four phases, and these in turn into stages, in which the first vaccinated will be health workers, bedridden adults over 60 years old, members of essential services and people over 16 years old. with disabilities.

With the 12,840 doses, 6,420 people will be vaccinated and the other 6 thousand will be kept frozen for 21 days.

About 1,101 centers will be used for the application of the anticovid vaccine.

A digital form was also enabled for the registration of those who wish to be vaccinated.

In addition to Pfizer, Panama will use the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca / Oxford, Johnson & Johnson and the Covax mechanism.
