Panama is the third American country with highest proportion of people vaccinated against the coronavirus, the government said citing a report by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The PAHO document ranked Panama as the third country in America with the most doses administered, preceded by Chile and the United States, and "the ninth in the world with the highest proportions of the population that have received at least one dose of the
vaccine. with 5.7% until last March 31".
Within the framework of the national immunization process against
covid , which began on January 20 and is divided into four phases, 440,787 doses have already been administered to priority groups, which include health personnel and people over 60 years of age with chronic diseases among other.
So far
Pfizer is the only supplier of the drug against
covid and that has delivered more than 530,010 doses to the Central American country, which has secured the purchase of 7.2 million
vaccines, 5 million from this pharmaceutical company and the rest from
AstraZeneca,
Johnson &
Johnson and the
Covax mechanism.
The health authorities reiterated that they are working to achieve more
vaccines after the use of Sputnik V from Russia is approved, while they are attentive to the investigations of specialized agencies on the drug
AstraZeneca.
The head of the
Minsa, Luis Francisco
Sucre, said this Wednesday that it is not ruled out requesting the
Covax mechanism "another alternative
vaccine to that of this pharmaceutical company", although he clarified that "the important thing is that more
vaccines arrive and thus cover most of the population ", according to official information.
Panama added 364 new cases of
covid-19 and 2 deaths from the disease on Wednesday, for a total of 357,277 confirmed infections and 6,148 deaths accumulated in just over a year of pandemic, a statement from the
Minsa indicated.
There are 415 hospitalized for the
coronavirus in ward and 69 in intensive care units (ICU), and 3,820 remain isolated at home with mild symptoms and 214 in hotel-hospitals.
The number of recovered patients reaches 346,611 since the first case of contagion was discovered in Panama, which maintains a fatality rate from
covid of 1.7%, one of the lowest in the Latin American region, says the
Minsa.
Panama has applied 2,205,603 diagnostic tests, 9,981 in the last 24 hours, with a positivity of 3.6%.
