Panama is the third most COVID-vaccinated country in Americas

Panama is the third most COVID-vaccinated country in Americas

Panama is the third American country with highest proportion of people vaccinated against the coronavirus, the government said citing a report by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
In its most recent report, the Pan-American body included data published by the Our World in Data website, linked to the University of Oxford, according to which in Panama a total 8.2% of accumulated doses are recorded per 100 people in 7 days, reported the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

The PAHO document ranked Panama as the third country in America with the most doses administered, preceded by Chile and the United States, and "the ninth in the world with the highest proportions of the population that have received at least one dose of the vaccine. with 5.7% until last March 31".

Within the framework of the national immunization process against covid , which began on January 20 and is divided into four phases, 440,787 doses have already been administered to priority groups, which include health personnel and people over 60 years of age with chronic diseases among other.

So far Pfizer is the only supplier of the drug against covid and that has delivered more than 530,010 doses to the Central American country, which has secured the purchase of 7.2 million vaccines, 5 million from this pharmaceutical company and the rest from AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and the Covax mechanism.

The health authorities reiterated that they are working to achieve more vaccines after the use of Sputnik V from Russia is approved, while they are attentive to the investigations of specialized agencies on the drug AstraZeneca.

The head of the Minsa, Luis Francisco Sucre, said this Wednesday that it is not ruled out requesting the Covax mechanism "another alternative vaccine to that of this pharmaceutical company", although he clarified that "the important thing is that more vaccines arrive and thus cover most of the population ", according to official information.

Panama added 364 new cases of covid-19 and 2 deaths from the disease on Wednesday, for a total of 357,277 confirmed infections and 6,148 deaths accumulated in just over a year of pandemic, a statement from the Minsa indicated.

There are 415 hospitalized for the coronavirus in ward and 69 in intensive care units (ICU), and 3,820 remain isolated at home with mild symptoms and 214 in hotel-hospitals.

The number of recovered patients reaches 346,611 since the first case of contagion was discovered in Panama, which maintains a fatality rate from covid of 1.7%, one of the lowest in the Latin American region, says the Minsa.

Panama has applied 2,205,603 diagnostic tests, 9,981 in the last 24 hours, with a positivity of 3.6%.
