Elvia Lau, director of Pharmacies and Drugs of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), announced that Panama authorized the Emergency Use of the Russian vaccine against COVID-19, Sputnik V, after concluding with the reviews of the dossier.
"When we saw the movements for the acquisition of this
vaccine we contacted the corresponding international organizations. They sent us the entire dossier, then we requested more information, and yesterday we finished reviewing and we realized that it meets all the requirements", Lau specified.
Since February, the head of the
Minsa, Luis Francisco
Sucre, addressed a note to the head of the Direct Investment Fund of Russia, manufacturer of the Sputnik V anticovid
vaccine, requesting 3 million doses of this formula, however an agreement had not been finalized .
After the authorization of the use of this
vaccine, the
Minsa and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must carry out the procedures to sign agreements with Russia to acquire this immunizer.
The Russian
vaccine, like that of the pharmaceutical company
Pfizer, requires the application of two doses. Lau explained that "both doses are different, since the second (with a red cap) contains slightly less of the main component of the
vaccine, than the first dose (with a blue cap)"
According to an analysis of clinical trials published by The Lancet medical journal, the Sputnik V
vaccine is 91.6% effective against
COVID-19 in its symptomatic manifestations.
To date, Panama has only received
vaccines from the pharmaceutical company
Pfizer, with which it has made progress in the immunization plan against
COVID-19.
