The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) highlighted this Wednesday the "worrying" rise in Covid-19 infections in South America, noting that, in the last week, Brazil and Argentina were among the 10 countries with the highest number of new infections around the world.
"
Covid-19 infections continue to increase in the Americas," PAHO Director Carissa Etienne said at a press conference. "But nowhere are infections more of a concern than in South America, where cases are increasing in almost every country."
In the last week, areas of Bolivia and Colombia have seen contagions double and the countries of the Southern Cone have experienced an acceleration of cases "with uninterrupted community transmission," she said.
In addition, she pointed out that in Peru and Ecuador the Intensive Care Units (ICU) are reaching their maximum capacity.
