The Ministry of Health of Panama will accept the recommendation of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG), to offer all pregnant women the vaccine against COVID-19, both in public and private facilities in the country.
This, in order that pregnant women do not have serious complications or death when they become infected with the virus.
"The evidence that exists on pregnancies and vaccinations was reviewed, this subject being discussed with advisers and authorities of the Ministry of Health, reaching the following conclusion: the risk of a pregnant patient when contracting
COVID-19 is greater and presents serious complications and death than a non-pregnant patient,” said Dr. Jaime Sánchez, president of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
During a press conference, the expert stated that the
COVID-19
vaccine developed by
Pfizer and
BioNTech was taken into consideration, to indicate that no matter the gestational time these patients have, the
vaccine should still be offered, being a public health policy.
