Minister Sucre confirms that the first community case of the Delta variant was detected in Chiriquí

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, confirmed this Friday, August 6, that in the province of Chiriquí the first community case of the Delta variant of Covid-19 was detected.
"As far as we understand, we already have a person in the province of Chiriquí with the Delta variant," Sucre said during a tour of the province of Veraguas.

“Be careful, let's not trust ourselves because the Delta variant is giving the United States problems; you know how it is in Colombia, India and the United Kingdom,” said Sucre.

Meanwhile, the press department of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that this case in Chiriquí was confirmed after genomic sequencing carried out by the Gorgas Institute.

Similarly, it was announced that the traceability of the people who had contact with this case in Chiriquí was carried out.

In this Friday's epidemiological report, the Minsa specified that this case of the variant in Chiriquí is a minor under 14 years of age.

“The minor reported having maintained close contact with a positive person, who to date has recovered from the disease. Both reported not having recently traveled to another country, so that it could be considered a community contagion,” explained the Minsa.

The report highlights that in addition to this case in Chiriquí, another 16 have been registered with the variant in travelers; 4 of them were captured by sea in the province of Colón and 11 at the Tocumen International Airport.

"In addition to a Panamanian travel crew who tests positive for the Delta variant, probably exposed in South America," Minsa reported.

Likewise, reference is made to the medical reports of these people and that they did not present complications from the disease and that they all completed the 14-day quarantine.
