The Medical Societies of Panama issued a statement in which they call on the authorities to implement stricter measures in the face of the increase in positive cases and deaths from coronavirus in the country.
We are facing an unprecedented national emergency. Projected government actions do not foresee a real decrease in cases / deaths; and obviously they must be more energetic, scientifically based on the biology of the virus. The current scenario of the number of daily cases and the expected projection, supposes a disproportionate increase in cases and deaths, reaching numbers higher than 515 deaths weeks ... the measures proposed by the Government would mean a reduction of only 0.8% of cases; therefore, more energetic measures are imposed that manage to reduce the number of cases by at least 60%, indicate the Medical Societies.
They express their understanding regarding the global and local economic situation, however, they consider that the actions carried out for weeks and months can no longer be changed and have resulted in deaths due to the direct effects of the disease and the collapse of the system. To which they appeal to the public conscience in order to achieve a significant decrease in cases, following the measures among which they propose a closure of non-essential activities for 14 days.
In order to reduce transmission, based on the current situation and with the projections made by the experts, we consider it necessary to establish a closure of all activities not essential for the lives of citizens for a minimum period of 14 days and up to 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the impact of the measures. It is very important to ensure the assistance measures in a forceful way to the population that requires it. During the closure period, there must be an effort by all government entities, civil society and communities to reinforce and increase the number of traceability brigades and achieve a massive detection of cases and isolation of these cases and their contacts, with the aim of cutting transmission, the statement emphasizes.
It also indicates that a new roadmap must be agreed to allow redirection of actions and measures, aimed at urgently and effectively controlling the activity of the pandemic; reduce the transmission of COVID
-19 and mitigate the effects of the disease, for which citizens must comply with the measures of use of masks, distancing and hand washing, limit the number of people in closed areas, and avoid crowds and meetings; which represents an important measure for family, business and population care.
It adds that positive patients should be classified and determined if their home meets the isolation requirements, and alternatives established in all cities, such as beds - hotels and shelters, in order to avoid the transmission of the virus at home, and grant the feeding and clinical surveillance of patients admitted to this facility.
The authorities announced a series of restrictive measures with the aim of mitigating the spread of COVID
-19, such as the extension of the curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., which began on Friday 18 from December; the restriction of entry to commercial premises by gender on specific days from Monday, December 21; as well as a total quarantine from December 24 at 7:00 pm to December 28 at 5:00 am; and from December 31 at 7:00 p.m. until January 4, 2021 at 5:00 am
