José Ríos appointed as new director of the penitentiary system
On Tuesday, May 5, 2020, José Ríos took office as the new director of the Penitentiary System, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Government.
Ríos is a retired commissioner of the National Police (PN).
He stated that his administration will focus on reinforcing the re-socialization programs so that the prisoners, once released, are able integrate back into society.
In addition, he indicated that they will double efforts in security, optimization of the resources, among other actions.
Meanwhile, Carlos González was appointed deputy director of the Penitentiary System since April 13.
On December 18, 2019 President Laurentino Cortizo terminated the contracts of the director of the Penitentiary System, Walter Hernández and the deputy director, Luis Alberto Gordón, after the brawl that occurred in La Joyita prison and that left 13 prisoners dead.
