Jacinda Ardern, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, has been made a dame in the country's highest honor, the New Zealand Order of Merit.
The appointment was announced by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins on Monday, as part of the King's Birthday public holiday.
Ardern served as Prime Minister from 2017 to 2023 and led the country through several crises, including the Christchurch terrorist attack and the
Covid-19 pandemic.
She became known as a progressive global icon for her empathy and leadership during these challenging times.
Despite facing criticism and challenges at home, Ardern's popularity remained high internationally.
She will be leaving her post to attend Harvard University as a fellow, but will return to New Zealand after completing the program.
