Faction led by Yanibel Ábrego challenges decision of CD directive on extraordinary convention

Faction led by Yanibel Ábrego challenges decision of CD directive on extraordinary convention

CD deputies delivered signatures to request the holding of an extraordinary convention to renew the party's Board of Directors.
Yanibel Ábrego, deputy of the Republic of Panama and general secretary of the Democratic Change party (CD), went to the Electoral Court on Monday to present a challenge to the decision taken by the Board of Directors of the group to reject a request for an extraordinary convention.

Ábrego was accompanied by 14 other party deputies, as well as mayors and village representatives.

"I am very excited to be accompanied today, presenting a challenge to the letter presented by the party president last week, disrespecting the mandate of 70% of the conventional ones ... we want to go to an extraordinary convention," said Ábrego.

In a letter released by the official account of the CD party, the Board of Directors reported that it rejected the request as inadmissible, concluding that the National Convention does not have the power to remove, shorten or interrupt the five-year term that the current Board of Directors must comply with. .

The same letter also detailed that of the 1,362 signatures submitted, 397 could not be verified, "and in addition, 530 resignations were received from conventional signatures that supposedly had signed but that certify in writing that they were not correctly informed of the supposed objective of the request".

In response to this last point, Yanibel Ábrego was accompanied by other supporters. “Today most of the members of the Democratic Change party demand to go to an extraordinary convention due to mismanagement of funds, we want to go to an extraordinary convention now, we want to recover the Democratic Change party to win the elections in 2024, and we have come from in a physical and face-to-face way before the magistrates, so that they do not ignore that in a democracy the majority rules ”.

Yanibel Ábrego reiterated the challenge to the CD president, "if Rómulo Roux says he has so much leadership, once again I will challenge him, let's go to the extraordinary convention and let's show who has the votes ... let's go to the Rómulo convention, don't be a coward."
