Cargo ship demolishes Gamboa bridge while passing through the Panama Canal

Around 11:00 on Tuesday morning 23 June a vessel hit the Gamboa bridge and knocked it down as it passed through the Panama Canal.
The Canal Administration (ACP) confirmed the accident through a statement.

According to the statement, they will investigate the causes of the collision of the ship against the railway bridge over the Chagres river in the Gamboa community.

The company that operates the railway was notified of the incident. In addition, Panama Canal personnel will inspect the bridge structure to assess the extent of the damage.

Access to and from the Gamboa community is not affected.

The rest of the operations and transits by the interoceanic route continue on a regular basis, the statement concluded.

There is no information about injuries in this accident and it was noted that vehicular traffic continues through the bridge that was built in 2018.
