Ex-president Jair Bolsonaro plotted a coup following his electoral defeat to Lula, according to testimonies from former military chiefs in Brazil.
Supreme court documents reveal that Bolsonaro discussed a document aimed at reversing the 2022 election result with top brass in December 2022. Despite his repeated denials, these statements implicate him in a scheme to cling to power.

Antônio Freire Gomes and Carlos Baptista Júnior informed police that they resisted Bolsonaro's attempts, which may have led to his arrest. While Bolsonaro did not enact a state of siege, his supporters violently stormed Brasília in January 2023.
More than 1400 individuals have been charged in connection with the insurrection, with 131 sentenced. The ongoing investigation seeks to establish if there was a conspiracy to subvert Brazil's electoral process and carry out a military coup to sustain Bolsonaro's presidency.
Now restricted from leaving Brazil, Bolsonaro also faces disqualification from political office until 2030 due to spreading electoral disinformation.
