The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) reported this Wednesday that Panama leads the world maritime fleet in terms of gross tonnage with more than 16% flagging.
In a statement, the entity highlighted that through the Ship Registry, Panama managed to reach a total of 230.5 million Gross Registry Tons (GRT), through 8,516 ships registered under the Isthmus flag.
These figures represent a growth of 6.22%, compared to the 217 million GRT obtained until December 2019, according to data from the IHS Markit platform, reported the AMP.
The institution highlighted that for the first time the Panamanian registry surpassed the 230 million GRT mark and that it also obtained its best growth since the end of 2011.
The AMP specified that between January and December 2020, the country added 1,033 ships to its fleet and 29.7 million GRT. Of this group, 339 ships correspond to newly built ships that, flying the national flag, contribute 14.3 million GRT to our fleet.
